Heartland Water Resources Council is a not-for-profit, 501(c)(3), organization dedicated to the preservation and restoration of the Peoria & Pekin Lakes of the Illinois River and its tributaries.
The Peoria & Pekin Lakes of the Illinois River are filling in with sediment and as a result there is an ongoing loss of aquatic habitat, hunting and fishing opportunities, a reduction in the amount of navigable waters, increased conflicts between barges and boaters, reduced access to lakefront properties and the potential for many marinas to be closed in the near future. Many areas within Peoria Lakes are less than 3 feet deep and getting shallower, and Pekin Lakes are completely dry at times. Past efforts have failed to address this critical problem in timely and effective ways; therefore, Heartland Water Resources Council has taken a leadership role to educate, plan and be an advocate for saving these extremely important natural resource, economic anchor and recreation amenities.
